A child may understand every step of a Maths question, yet still leave half the paper unfinished. Another may read fluently but forget the instructions moments later. These are not always gaps in subject knowledge. They are often gaps in the mental skills that help children start, sustain and complete learning. Greater flexibility when learning gets difficult
Children who struggle with cognitive flexibility can become stuck when an answer does not come immediately or when feedback challenges their first attempt. They may abandon a question, repeat the same ineffective method or feel that one mistake means they are ‘bad’ at the subject.

Why outcomes differ from child to child
Progress is rarely linear. A child with weak organisation may respond quickly to routines and visual planning tools, while another needs longer to develop working memory or emotional regulation. Age, learning profile, sleep, anxiety, school workload and the consistency of practice at home all influence results.
It also depends on whether training is connected to real academic tasks. Games and brain challenges can be engaging, particularly for younger children, but the transfer matters most. Instead of asking only, ‘What mark did you get?’, try, ‘What helped you stay with that difficult question?’ or ‘What will you do differently before the next test?’ The conversation shifts from judgement to strategy. Children learn that improvement is something they can influence.
Avoid measuring every skill at once. If a child is working hard to manage attention, demanding perfect organisation and instant emotional control can create more pressure. Prioritise the skill that is currently limiting learning most, celebrate specific effort and build from there.

The strongest result of executive function training is not a child who depends on adults to keep them on track. It is a child who can recognise a challenge, choose a strategy and keep moving forward.
That capability supports better work in the next assessment, but it also travels with them into a new school year, a more demanding syllabus and eventually adult life. Give your child the time and guided practice to build it, and academic progress has a far stronger foundation to stand on.
